@ Nona, actually I had this in draft for over 2 months. I've been feeding to the post ever since BRTS was announced in Trivandrum. :) So when these low-floor buses caught the news I thought it would be an apt time to publish it with a few added pics and data.. :)

@ Chowlaji, yeah Delhi BRTS is screwed up and I hope the succeeding plans will take the factors into consideration.

Nona was right, its very good to compare kerala city roads with pune roads. They are narrow and BRTS just made it more conjusted and made pune peoples's life horrible. But atleast for the bus commuters its little helpful as the journey time saves lots becz of traffic conjunction. but others vehicles are suffering. And over all design of "lane, bustops, bus stop position and even bus" added problems. It was un unplanned effort happened in pune. But in ahmmedabad its looks more planned which visible in the foot step height of bus and the bus stop design (unlike pune). but important thing is that the ahammedabad has a very broad roads, which in anyway kerala lacks. may be pune BRTS designers expected people to leave their personal vehile and to board public vehicle, but it didnt happen. With the boom of indian automobile industry and the kind of introduction of nano like vehicle will make our traffics hell and if we going to make another space consuming BRTS, it will affect negetively in time.
In my personal opinion, BRTS is just a remedy for todays problems, if we really want an improvement we should look at least 10yr ahead. it will definitly pointing towars a futuristic solution like mono rail, skybus or metro rail. So BRTS going to give us a benefit only for period of 10 yr (max). so we should be more aggressive in getting new gen solutions to our god's own country.
I would like to share one more information - the metro rails are less efficient and space consuming than a monorail. And around the world metro rail is considering as a status symbol... so we need to have a better understanding what project will suit us rather than jumping behind others.
* I m definitly backing BRTS since its the easiest way for our current traffic problems, but i jus wanted us to think for future
(i m a keralite currently reciding in pune, had a visit in ahammedabad, a design graduate and done a small project on Mass transportion in india cities )

Pune has implemented an exclusive lane for buses. It irked the Punaikars. They are protesters; but not violent protesters! But, there was couple of deaths on this exclusive lane as people were trying to cross the road when the bus hit them! This was way back in 2006

@ Mathew, the A/C buses are a curtain raiser to the huge plans the authorities hope to implement in Tvm.

@ Navas, it will take time for the system to be successful. The non A/C buses wont have such huge fares. There has been widespread acceptance, especially by the Technopark employees. There is a quiet drive going on in favour of using these buses in TP and I have a hunch this is going to work :)

Even in Bangalore the 'Vajra' services were only slowly nodded to by the people. So give it time, the people of Trivandrum will realize the benefits once the full regiment of 150 soldiers hit our roads and when the BRTS system is tried out.

As you said, lets be optimistic. We have to be positive about the set-up, it works man! BRTS is important for our city, if it fails in Tvm then our cities are going to remain as traffic bottlenecks for good.

@ Anish, at the moment these buses are plying mostly through the best roads in the city, viz Kowdiar, Vazhuthacaud, Airport Road and so on. As you know almost 90% of the city's main roads are u/c for various reasons and the travel is a nightmare now. But in a few months when the works are finished, Trivandrum is going to have over 40km of 4/6 lane roads and this surely will help. :)

The only thing I'm worried about is these notorious drama in front of our Secretariat and the destruction of public property following the strikes. Well, as a capital of Kerala we may have to live with it but I really hope someone could find a solution to tackle this menace. :X

Lanes - If we could atleast start the lane system in ring roads(ones which circle the city) I guess it would be good. But as far as the lane discipline go, we are the worst, so not sure of people would have some civic sense and follow lanes.
I take the volvo everyday to work and the total time I take is 1.5 hours for 15kms, because of the interchange and traffic.
I still prefer bus than taking my car into the chaotic traffic in Blore.

P.S : So happy to see new set of volvo buses in TVM.It is already a hit in chennai and banglore...But the question is how it will fare in creepy roads in kerala....

I myself have experienced the convenience and efficiency of BRTS here in Ireland.

I am so proud & happy to see a similar development springing up in our God's Own Country....
