Just one small point to clarify, a transshipment port does not bring containers to land, unlike a feeder port like Cochin. The containers are moved from ship to shore and then back to ship. Incoming containers arrive on mainline vessels which are too big to enter most feeder ports and are transshiped to smaller feeder vessels which deliver them to the ultimate destination where they are unloaded and taken by truck or train to the receiving facility. Outgoing containers go the opposite way.<BR/><BR/>Only a small fraction of the container traffic at a transshipment port leaves its boundaries. This is amply illustrated by Colombo or Singapore.<BR/><BR/>Evidently, a container port does not need a massive industrial hinterland to sustain it. <BR/><BR/>Unfortunately, this simple point has been missed by the wise men for decades and continues to be missed.<BR/><BR/>Of course, the presence of a deepwater container port and cheap container shipping rates will attract industries in droves.
