The national highways are not meant for traders, big or small. It is for movement of people from one town to another. Kerala politicians must learn from the proverb 'Give a man fish and you can feed for a day, teach him how to fish and he will feed himself for the rest of his life'. I travel regularly from Bangalore to Palakkad by Bus or Car. The stretch of around 25 kilometers from Walayar to Palakkad Railway Station through the Chandranagar Bypass inflicts thrice nasty a damage (if not more) to my vehicle's suspension than it ever does all the way from Bangalore to Coimbatore.
Our Towns (as we have very few Cities) boast of "all modern amneties" while we have only one internet service provider, no roads which can be used by vehicles bought out of hard earned money, no decent hypermalls (Big Bazar is NOT a hypermall) and what not "not".

I would not expect standard roads or standard infrastructure in Kerala as none of the City or Town administrators seem to have any sense of "Standards". Its like you dont build what you dont know of.

On top of all this, the Real Estate Prices in Kerala prove it to be truly "God's Own and Only Country". Guys, Land is cheaper in Bangalore than in Palakkad and Cochin. But hey, we have BEML and proposed Coach Factory in Palakkad!
A Panchayat area in Palakkad quotes around 4 lakhs per Cent (436 sq ft) which equates to around 900 per sq. ft. You get nice land for 900 per square feet on the periphery of Bangalore City where you can drive for 45 minutes and reach one of the most noted cities in the world.
I dont want to mention Cochin Land prices as they are much more than what is prevalant in Bangalore.

No wonder someone called Kerala a "Brandhalayam" (Those days it was on a different context and these days its on a different one).

I am thinking of starting a Real Estate Agency in Kerala offering cheaper lands in Bangalore City than in Attappadi or Mannarkad,,, any partners?

There are always some who would hinder any progress. I had never given road width any thought, but even then it seemed understood that one does need wide roads for free flowing traffic.
Sad about MG road...

How come we always take a humanitarian decision(pun intended) during decision making on the city improvements? All the major metros (and other major cities) would have debated this rationale before building overpasses! Didn't they build it finally? What happened to the the street vendors in these cities? Can't our "fathers" of the city learn a lesson from these cities?

Interesting point about Sahodaran Ayyappan and MG Road. This was new to me! I completely agree on the potential of the bypass road though I have a few concerns as I just back from Ernakulam.

There is road work going near Kundanalloor junction where bypass road intersects with the airport-seaport road. I was stuck in the traffic for 2 hours on a Saturday! The reason being the road narrows towards the Aroor side because of construction. The construction of the road commenced two years back! This is awfully long implementation cycle.

Bypass is a bypass. :) MG Road is a commercial hub. If the bypass transforms into a commercial hub, then the purpose might get voided because of the criss cross traffic and people crossing over. If there are plans to construct underpasses or overpasses and subways, this could easily be solved. But, the biggest drawback in Kerala is long inception phase and long implementation phase! Unless and until this is tackled...

Guess Kerala is a small place and one should expect these glitches.. but in the end, the project will go through like the earlier ones with special consideration (there will be turns and twists to the roads) given to the property of those with power and money... if u remember, it was not just the magazine sellers nor the lime juice sellers who made much noise for other such projects, but those ones who keep the "spirits" of the Keralites high!
