A day in Kerala starts with the suprabhatham, a cuppa & a newspaper. The papyrus has become such a part & parcel of mallu life that Malayala Manorama is the lone regional daily in India to cross 1.5million copies.
Logically, the comprehension of the late news by Keralites are clearly influenced by the colour of the ink in those newspapers, with each leading daily speaking a variant of the story at most times. I read the online version of Kerala Kaumudi, Deepika and Malayala Manorama regularly, and also brush through Mathrubhumi, and it is interesting to note the starking differences between the leading dailies.
Kerala Kaumudi is a newspaper with a background of nearly 100 years. It was started with a noble aim, like all old newspapers, has its name etched in the history of Kerala state. But Kaumudi still lags behind Manorama and Mathrubhumi in circulation, some data indicating it is still behind Deshabhimani.

Kaumudi has been a torchbearer for the state's socially backward communities, especially the Ezhava, Muslim and the scheduled castes. KK, as we'll call it from now, has a tradition of toiling for the poor and oppressed, against exploitation, harassment and injustice and has done a fairly good job until now.
KK is still orthodox in its outfit; it hosts a modest online paper, hasn't yet evolved any sporty looks and fills itself with more news than ads (+1 for that) . It is not much interested in news about development initiatives (though there are welcome signs of change), flaunts a totally sub-par sports page and is an embarrassment when it comes to reporting business news.
Appreciably though, Kaumudi has been able to balance itself while doing political reporting, with an arguable, yet understandable soft corner for the left parties. Saying so, its not possible to close our eyes towards the aggressive campaigning to ouster the A.K. Antony led Congress Govt in 1996 after the Sivagiri incident. While Antony was politically at fault in ordering Police action in the revered shrine, Kaumudi went on an open and merciless offensive against the Chief Minister which eventually led to his downfall in the succeeding elections.
It may be a coincidence, but KK is a bit too quick at arriving to conclusions, especially if a subject (in person) falls in their pamper-list. When the Nalini Netto- Neelalohithadasan Nadar scandal broke out, KK reported the breaking news as "Upper-class lobby trying to scuttle a backward-class minister". Neelan has been acquitted by the courts now, all right, and we all know under what circumstances, but Kaumudi's 'early-judgement' in this case left me guessing.
Curious enough, Kaumudi never said a word about the recent infamous dog-remarks by our big-mouthed CM Achuthanandan in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attack. A couple of days after the storm started to rage, Kaumudi had an interesting piece in its editorial page supporting the wacky CM, (without any mention about the real incident) criticizing the other media for blowing out of proportion a 'trivial and colloquial use of phrase' and that Kerala print & visual media were foot-lickers of the National media...and so on...
If there is one single chronicle which could underscore this hasty state-of-affairs and jumping to conclusions at Kaumudi, it is the Sr. Abhaya Murder case. It will be unfair and unjust to comment on this issue because very few really know what happened on March 27th 1992, but Kaumudi guys are dead sure about the murderers. Don't ask how.
Perhaps Kaumudi hosts the creme of the investigative journalists in India, who can rival Sherlock Holmes in their profession. Kudos.

Kaumudi has been all over the accused, with explosive, extravagant and extensive tales about the crime and has literally sentenced the accused to death. On the other hand, Deepika has been ferocious against any attempts to point a finger at the defendants; for them its a conspiracy against the Church. But what about the poor public?
The one truth remains that there can't be two sides to the tale: the accused are either guilty or innocent. Let the truth prevail at the end, but Kaumudi acted the self-appointed solicitor of the plaintiffs by turning the case into a spectacular tabloid tale, whilst it was still on court tables. KK also landed in hot water through a patriotic editorial with severe remarks about Justice Hema, and had to fall on the court's feet with an unconditional apology.
This may be news for you if you're a Kaumudi reader because the contempt of court case against Kerala Kaumudi didn't appear in the newspaper. Why? If you were so bold to take on the courts why hold back from the readers what really transpired??
So in a nutshell Kerala Kaumudi has been fair, except for patches. It wont stink, if you open up the archives. Between, want to experience real third rate journalism? Welcome abroad MalayalaManorama, the most widely circulated newspaper in Kerala.. *cough* Read about it here in Part III...
KK's looks itself is a dampener...seriously I've never read that newspaper...
ReplyDeletewaiting for the next part on manorama, a newspaper which I hate a bit:D
It is quite obvious from your two parts of the story that you have some personal grudge against Manorama. Maybe you should call your blog a personal diary if you plan to vent out your frustrations here. As for MM, it is still the best smoothest most colorful Mallu newspaper around read by a populace which is more than the subscribers of the other contenders put together.
ReplyDeleteVery unfortunate that you don't belong to the majority club.
@Prakash
ReplyDeleteIf u rate a news paper by colour and advertisements Nonorama is the best:D
Eagerly waiting for NOnorama in Part III.
Agree with all your points on KK. But I would like to point out 1 thing. You are upset with KK giving the verdict B4 full facts are known.
ReplyDeleteKK argued that neelan nadar was innocent. Didnt the court rule so? So KK was right.
KK was right in the Sivagiri issue as well. Remeber even Antony apologised for what he did then.
Remember how well KK led the fight for SME case. They fought for the girl and won the case for her.
about Abhaya case only time will tell. But I feel KK is right here also.
So it is a peper which holds on to some ethics. Unlike Manorama and deshabhimani which is not even good to wipe shit of your anus.
Waiting for the part 3 about manorama...
Hi genius,
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising to know the dark side of KK.Really interesting to read your post...
Let only the guilty ones be punished &the innocent ones never be accused...This is my prayer & let our media ALWAYS stand for the Real Truth.
Waiting impatiently to read Part !!!Best Of Luck!
I cannot give a credible opinion on this since i dont read any of em...has always been a Hindu reader which i consider is the best in our country....
ReplyDeleteBut still the way media is controlled by various interest groups in our state makes a mockery of journalism....
@nishant - which is exactly why TOI is the best english daily in the country :D
ReplyDeleteMM and TOI have higher subscription and have more advertisers because of their content.
you and your comrades might not feel so but the majority does!
get help.
stand up for yourself, dont speak on behalf of someone else.
@prakash
ReplyDeletePlease Dont insult me by calling Comrade:D.
TOI is the moost popular news paper in the country..My dear friend most popular is not the best always..
Go thru the following link before making any comments..u can see the real niram of Manorama..this is y manorama is the most colorful mallu news paper 4 u..
http://tvmrising.blogspot.com/2007/10/printed-word-unsaid.html
@ Praveen, KK needs some facials, true. This is what Manorama is doing well. MM comes out like a Film MAgazine, while KK still has the 1960 film poster look.
ReplyDelete@ Venusplanet, Im happy that KK was proved right on many occasions but I'll keep the Neelan case out of 'victory' list. We know what happened in the Nalini-Neelan case and how he was acquitted, so I dont want to elaborate on all this.
But I appreciate your points. Thanks. :)
@ Mirage, its not the 'dark' side, may be the 'less brighter' side. Its not such a bad paper, its readable :)
@ Agree with you Mathew. Hindu is the best of the lot..But I've a strong suggestion if you decide to read Malayalam papers: Manorama! ;)) Its fun if you are able to read btw lines...lol
Now @ Prakash...
ReplyDeletebuddy, I wrote just 2-3 sentences about Manorama in my previous two posts, and it was enough to miff you?? Whew, I'm already scared thinking about publishing the Manorama-exclusive part. lol...
You judge a newspaper by its "smoothness" , "colour" and smell?? I would use such adjectives to evaluate a Whisky, not a leading daily. For me a newspaper is judged by the "quality of the news", "unbiased reporting of events", "ethics in functioning" and "trustworthiness". Sorry to say, Manorama scores below-par in all categories.
May be I will elaborate about what I think in my post soon. I dont want to fill it up in this comments section.
@ Nishanth, now you've been addressed 'comrade'... thoongichavede....:)))
what can one do if people think those who oppose Manorama are communists...??? :)))
@scorpio - you're grudge against MM arises from the fact that you and other Nonoramians believe that MM is biased against Trivandrum development. That may or may not be true. Again, I have seen Nonoramians quoting MM whenever they have written something progressive about Trivandrum. Personally, I would not even bother to read a newspaper which does not publish news in my interests. You should do the same rather than quoting them when they talk good and dissing them when they don't.
ReplyDeleteOne should also look at the good side of MM. The first choice for advertisements is MM. Our parents read the MM to pick on local news and even obituaries of their far-flung relatives. The outreach is so much larger that MM is the first choice for even the departed souls!
Would love to hear from you on Deshabhimani and Kairali News and how they Flash news like "2 dead in road accident" when the country is celebrating a UPA victory or something like that.
"You judge a newspaper by its "smoothness" , "colour" and smell?? I would use such adjectives to evaluate a Whisky"
ReplyDeleteROTFL!!!!!!nice one... ;-D
Keralakaumudi doesnt interest me at all. as u said it is not interested in development, only in ezhava community and communists. the paper is only prominent in the southern districts. it may be true that they are better reporters but they deifinitely have a love for the communist party. I've heard my friends telling that keralakaumudi always will support achutanandan because he is also ezhava..
ReplyDeleteno offense here, but your idea of their reporting the dog-incident proves it.hahaha
i think you have done a fair writing here.well done.
im waiting to read the partiii about manorama, hahahaa it is a joke is it not. if u have such strong accusations against keralakaumudi then what would it be agianst manorama?
im also waiting to see what u think about my paper mathrubhumi.
for me the ranking of kerala papers is
mathrubhumi
keralakaumudi
manorama
deepika.......
sorry to keep manorama to no 3..they deserve to be even lower. hahaha
@ Prakash, we are arriving at something here, aren't we?
ReplyDeleteYou're speaking about Skyscrapercity forum where this Manorama slander regularly happens. Some may be severely over-prejudiced but 'Trivandrum' is not the only reason for me to form my opinion about Manorama. I do love Manorama to take up my hometown issues, as it is the most powerful and popular print media, whilst the opposite usually transpires. I dont judge anything and anyone purely based on what X,Y or Z thinks, but I do confess it sometimes influence a belief.
I never addressed Manorama as Nonorama or Pulurama in skyscrapercity or in any other forum..never ever. I believe that paper is much too low for even such titles, honestly.
Whats the whole point in whinging about Deshabhimani n Kairali dude, when we all know where the ink comes from?? What do ye want me to do? Cry that Deshabhimani is not supposting the Congress?? :)))MM, KK and Mathrubhumi are serious papers and not some party-bellringers. The last thing we want from them is to degrade into a Deshabhimani or Veekshanam, though MM appears to be the big-brother of the latter. ;
So I'm not elaborating more on something I havnt written about here. Im surprised that you have no observations about Kaumudi or our National Media, about whom I spoke in the blog. Well, we see only what we want to see, huh?
Good day to ye.. :)
I like Malayala Manorama and Mathrubhoomi.
ReplyDeleteHaven't bothered reading anything else till now.
Waititng for post 3 where you will presumably crucify Manorama :)
Interesting blog scorpiogenesis!
ReplyDeleteI don't read Kaumudi regularly though I look at it when online. I dont know any house here in Trichur which subscribes to it. Here Manorama Rocks!!!!! I know it upsets you, but people just wants to read about the news. They never bother to scrutinize if the paper is actually publishing the truth. Thatz why Manorama is surviving in Kerala. [I agree to some comments here that they are not the best, though they are widely circulated]] even I read Manorama and I know how they write things. but I dont mind it man.
Each newspaper have their own version of the news and you've explianed it well with Kaumudi as an example. I dont read politics, so what Manorama writes about Communists or BJP doesnt bother me. They have good Career/Opportunity suppliments, good sports page and is the best looking paper in Kerala. So we read them even though the news standards are low.
I am eager to read what you have in store for Manorama.
[Also let me mention it to you that your subscribe to posts feed seem to have some trouble.. Its giving me invalid address]]]
lol
ReplyDeleteScorpio-i know you not one of those nonoramians (btw pulurama was funny), you got sense up there, unfortunately you ve joined the wrong club and i can't help laffin!
ReplyDelete^^ Prakash, lets remain in our own clubs..If we r in one single club then the fun is over, you see..? :)))
ReplyDeleteI joined a club which was already toooooooooo long. I realized that after I joined it, which you're yet to realize..:)) Since you are happy, and I'm also very happy to see you happy, lets have some cutting chai and get some sleep. All sober?
;-) to all manorama fans! :)
good night :-)
ReplyDeletegood observations... If I were to write a blog anyday, the same would have been my topic :)
ReplyDeleteWhat did I say about Kaumudi and achitanandan? See in todays edition Kaumudi has carried an article hugley in favour of the cm rubbishing the claims that he tried to split the communist party. this is before anyone from the communists or the cm ever spoke a word about the accusations.
ReplyDeleteSee how patriotoc kk is for the ezhava cm!
why blame manorama only for favouritism? all papers have their own darlings and sweethearts.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIf i were given the Hindu, Manorama, Indian Express, Times of India and the KK or Mathrubhumi to read in the BOG at home, this would be my order of preference...
ReplyDelete1. Express - we-dont-care attitude, lots of focus on local issues, a bit of gossip, covers all sections of society
2. Manorama - bold headlines, local issue coverage, colorful
3. Times - for the bog visit after work...there is a lot to read..too many pages
4. HINDU - would read the city pages and everything else is too conservative or bland...
5. KK & Mathrubhumi - maybe? too damp for an already "damp: indian POT :)
http://godsowncraters.blogspot.com
Scorpio,
ReplyDeleteExcellent post man..hooked on:)
First time visitor here, But u have another reader in me for sure.Nice analysis..Have always been a manorama reader..infact to be honest manorama and mathrubhoomi.
A good analysis. The fact that left me in a state of disappointment is that it is behind one of the worst papers in Kerala - Desabhimani.
ReplyDeleteIt is wrong and unhealthy to jump into conclusions. The stand of the CM in the dog remark incident was wrong and it had to be voiced against, which KK didn't do.
Seriously, I fail to think of another Malayalam newspaper after MM and Mathrubhumi. Generally I dislike Manorama for their unwanted and bogus reports. But the city special 'Metro' is one I like. :-)
Interesting dude.....
ReplyDeleteI never have read KK...... till now.........
yes, most papers do lean towards a particular side...... it is after all propaganda.... :)
yeah, now waiting for next part on manorama.....
Haa...well now after reading your article I am starting to miss all the Kerala newspapers too...sniff...sniff! It almost resembled a battle field when we cousins got up in the morning and tried to tear the newspapers from each others hands...that's when our taravad subscribed to all the malayalam newspapers available in town..
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog...will be here again...
KK was always been a bit activist and politically leftist. It is rather serious in its journalistic approach in the sense it is less gossippy and less populist.
ReplyDeleteAnother way of saying this would be that it is less commercially successful and less 'interesting' compared to Manorama.
It may be behind the curve when it is about catching up with times, Or may be there is a segment out there who wants that line of journalism and KK is not able to go beyond that segment.
I like the dig into history.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have an opinion on Manorama and Kaumudi, but what about Mathrubhoomi? Why silent about them? All newspapers have their own PoV, which may differ from ours. doesnt mean they are bad. I like Kaumudi and they way they fight for justice. Manorama stinks, as you said. Mathrubhoomi, Dheepika, Madhyama all write their own versions of a story, thats what they call free press.
i am not critisizing your post but that is the way things go in a democratic country. Or should we rather be like china where we only get one side of the news?
@ xeno, mmmm understandable :)
ReplyDelete@ Nevermind, Im happy you removed the adjective 'unbiased' for Manorama from your first comment ;)
@ Rohit, thanks for dropping by.
@ Sreejith, MM & Mathrubhumi are definitely the leading ones but KK deserves to be along with them. I think the comment by Unni has a lot of sense.
@ Sakshi, thats the obsession of Malayalees for newspapers. Thanks for the comment.
@ Unni, thats some finer points dude. Well said. Appreciate that.
@ dr.kp, this paper is good, this paper is bad, thats not the meaning of this series. Its not about "searching for perfection" but the way we are forced to believe in some forged tales by the newspapers. The ethos of the journalism is lost, and how its changed, thats the point of this post.
Nice article. Kerala kaumudi along with Mathrubhoomy is the two good news paper in Malayalam. I do not read Manorama but that paper suck. Deepika is also belong to the same catergory. Madhayamam is good at times but cannot be believed fully. Deshabhimani is a good joke to read, a comedy paper.
